Viking Burner Clicks but Will Not Light: A Wellesley Walkthrough
A burner that clicks without catching, and one that lights with a lazy orange flame, usually share a single cause: the air-to-gas mixture at the head. Check cap seating and blocked ports first, then look at where the spark is actually landing.
First, and ahead of everything that follows: a gas smell that does not clear means everybody out of the house, light switches left alone on the way, and the gas utility’s emergency line rung once you are outside. That is not a repair call and we are not the right number for it.
With that said, the burner in front of you probably has a subtler complaint. It clicks a long time before it catches, and when it finally does the flame comes up orange at the tips, wanders across the head, and lifts away from the ports when you turn it down. Those read as two problems. They are usually one, and it lives in the ratio of air to gas at the burner head.
How much of the range is misbehaving?
Count first, because the answer halves the problem. One burner behaving badly points at that burner’s cap, its ports and its electrode. Every burner behaving badly moves the question to the shared spark module, the earth, or the gas arriving at the appliance. Clicking that continues with all the knobs off is a third fault entirely.
Write down what you can see while it is happening. Which burner. What the flame does on high and what it does at the lowest setting. Whether it improves after a minute of running. Whether the clicking stops once the burner is alight or carries on regardless.
Wellesley kitchens shape this more than people expect. In Wellesley Square a 30- or 36-inch range shares one tight run of cabinets with a panel-front dishwasher, and a boil-over on the nearest burner has nowhere to go but into the head. In the Wellesley Hills rear additions the range is worked hard every weeknight, so wear shows up on the burners that get used and nowhere else. And in Poet’s Corner, where the range often moved to a rebuilt exterior wall during a renovation, a range that has never burned properly since it was relocated is a different conversation from one that changed last Tuesday.
Cap seating, port blockage and what a wet clean leaves behind
Lift the cap off and look at the seat underneath. A cap sitting a fraction proud changes the path the flame takes and can stop a burner lighting at all, even with a perfectly healthy spark. Set it back down, let it find its register, and push gently at one edge. If it rocks, it is not seated, and that alone may be your whole fault.
Ports next. The small openings around the rim of the head clog with carbon and boil-over residue, and blocked ports are what produce the lazy orange flame — the gas that should be spread evenly around the rim gets forced through whatever openings remain, which throws the mixture out at every one of them. Clear them with a soft brush and, if something has to go into a port, a toothpick, or a paperclip opened out straight. What must never go in is a drill bit or a needle file. A port that has been widened burns wrong permanently.
Then moisture. Water sitting in the head or lying across the electrode after a wet clean will suppress ignition until it has properly dried. Take the caps and heads off, leave them where air can circulate around them, and do not put them back damp. There is no reliable clock on this; it depends on the kitchen, so judge it by dryness rather than by time.
Reading the spark you can see
Dim the kitchen and watch. What you are looking for is a tight blue-white snap between the tip of the electrode and the metal of the burner head, repeating in precisely the same spot each time. If it wanders, forks, jumps to a pan support, or fires somewhere below the head, the module is doing its job and the energy is simply being delivered to the wrong place.
The most common physical cause is a hairline crack in the ceramic insulator around the electrode. The spark tracks down the body of it to whatever earth is nearest instead of crossing the intended gap. It presents as a burner that clicks confidently, lights sometimes, and gets markedly worse when the surface is wet or something has boiled over.
Carbon and food residue can also bridge the gap, giving the spark an easier path than air. That one cleans off. The cracked insulator does not.
The point underneath all of this is worth stating plainly: the clicking is the module discharging, and it happens whether or not the discharge lands anywhere useful. Hearing clicks proves the spark side has power. It proves nothing about where that spark is going.
Is gas actually arriving?
Work through the obvious in order. Does another gas appliance in the house light normally. Is the range’s own shut-off handle in line with the pipe rather than across it. Has the utility done any work on the street or the meter recently. If nothing gas-fired in the house is behaving, you are looking at a supply question rather than an appliance fault.
There is a reason sniffing around for gas does not count as a diagnostic step, and it is worth spelling out. Your nose can tell you that gas is present, which is a safety signal and means you leave. It cannot tell you that enough gas is arriving, at the right pressure, at that particular burner. Those are measurements, not impressions.
This is where a homeowner should stop. The regulator, the orifices, the flexible connector and the valve behind the knob are all beyond the point where a wrong guess is merely expensive.
The symptoms that mean stop now
Delayed ignition is the one to take seriously. A burner that collects gas for several seconds and then lights with an audible thump has allowed a volume of gas to build before igniting it, and it is treated as more urgent than a burner that never lights at all. Stop using that burner.
The same applies to a burner that lights and then drops out on its own, and to sparking that continues after the flame is established. Both mean the appliance has lost the ability to tell whether it is alight, which is the function that keeps it safe.

The burner clicks — does that mean the igniter is fine?
It means the spark module has power and is discharging. It does not mean the spark is arriving where it is needed. A cracked ceramic sleeve, or a carbon path across the electrode, sends that discharge to the nearest earth rather than over the intended gap, and the clicking sounds identical either way.
All the burners click at once when I turn one knob. What is that?
On many ranges every electrode is fed from one shared spark module, so a single knob sets the whole set clicking. By itself that is normal. It becomes a fault when the clicking will not stop once the flame is established, or when it carries on with every control off, which points at a switch behind a knob.
Is a burner that lights after five seconds a problem?
Yes, and it is worth acting on rather than living with. A delay means gas has been collecting around the head before anything ignites it, so when it does catch it arrives with a thump instead of a soft whoosh. Stop using that position and have the cap seating, the ports and the electrode examined.
