Viking Dishwasher Not Draining in Wellesley: Work Back From the Sump

A dishwasher that has never emptied properly usually has an installation fault rather than a failed pump: a lost high loop, a crushed hose, or a disposer knockout still blanking the branch. A wet sump is normal; water across the tub floor is not.

There is a question worth asking before any of the usual ones: has this machine ever emptied properly? A surprising number of the calls that come in as a failed pump turn out to be a plumbing arrangement that has been marginal since the day the kitchen was finished, and which finally tipped over when a little grease or a little scale narrowed the margin. Faults that date from installation behave differently from faults that arrive, and they are worth separating early.

Start by deciding whether anything is wrong

Some water left in the bottom is intentional. Keeping the pump seal from drying out between cycles is the whole reason the sump holds water at all, and a shallow pool in the recess around the filter is that arrangement working. What is not designed is water lying across the flat of the tub, deep enough to slop when the door swings open.

The distinction is about extent, not presence. Damp floor with a little water down in the well: normal. Water covering the base, or standing high enough to wet the underside of the lower basket: the discharge did not finish.

Now put a history to it, because that is what tells an installation fault from a wear fault. Was there a first time, and can anyone name the week? Does every programme leave water, or only the quick one that runs short? Has the machine been out of its opening — for a floor, for a leak, for a new worktop? Each of those is an opportunity for the drain arrangement to end up worse than it started.

The filter stack, which is where this usually ends

Take the lower basket out and lift the filtration out of the floor of the tub. In most machines a cylindrical strainer releases with a short twist and comes away, leaving a flat mesh plate that then lifts clear. Rinse both in hot water at the sink and work the mesh gently with a soft brush — nothing stiff, because a distorted screen is worse than a dirty one.

Read what has collected before rinsing it away. Soft debris — seeds, skins, the paper label off a jar that went in still attached — is straightforward blockage and says only that the interval has been stretched. A slippery grey coating that smears under a thumb is fat that never got hot enough to leave with the water. A hard, gritty crust that will not brush off is mineral deposit, and it is the version of this fault that arrives so slowly nobody notices it happening.

Then look down into the sump the filters were covering. Glass from a broken tumbler, a splinter of bone or a shard of hard plastic can sit against the impeller and stop it moving water without producing any other symptom. Glove up, remove anything visible, and leave anything you cannot see. On how frequently the stack should come out, follow the schedule in your own model’s literature; the honest general rule is that if you cannot recall doing it, it is due.

From the pump outlet to the sink cabinet

Once water leaves the pump it has to go uphill before it goes anywhere else. The discharge hose is taken up to a high point under the counter, or through an air gap fitted on the sink deck, and only then allowed to fall to its connection. Without that rise, waste from the sink side can work its way back into the tub. Some installations here use an air gap and some rely on the loop alone; either is a valid arrangement, and what matters is that one of them exists and has not been undone.

The undoing is the common part. A hose unclipped from the cabinet wall when the machine came out for a floor and never clipped back sits in a long sag, and that sag holds standing water and drains lazily forever afterward. A hose pinched between the appliance and the cabinet frame, or flattened under a levelling foot as the unit was slid back, restricts flow every cycle from that day.

And the single most reliable post-installation fault of them all: a waste disposer fitted without knocking out the blank. Disposers ship with the dishwasher branch sealed by a plug that must be driven out before the hose is connected. Leave it in place and the machine has nowhere to send its water at all. If the trouble dates precisely to a new disposer — a fortnight, a month, whenever it went in — check that before anything is dismantled.

When drainage degrades over months rather than overnight

The slow version of this fault has no event to point at, which is what makes it frustrating. Mineral content in the supply leaves a deposit that narrows passages, roughens the inside of the hose and coats the filter mesh so that it clogs faster each time. Nothing fails. The capacity of the whole path simply shrinks until a load that would have drained two years ago no longer does.

Detergent and rinse aid behaviour is often the first thing anyone notices, and it is worth reading as a symptom rather than treating as a cause. Powder left in the dispenser, a film on glassware, a machine that seems to need more product than it used to — those are signs the water chemistry or the wash temperature has moved, not evidence that a different brand will fix the drainage. Changing product is a reasonable thing to try and a poor thing to rely on.

Whether the water here is hard enough to be the main character in this story is a question for your own supply rather than an assumption worth printing. What is safe to say is that scale accumulates wherever water sits and evaporates, and that a machine in a Wellesley Hills or Babson Park kitchen that has run daily for a decade has had a great many opportunities. Do not reach for a chemical drain product. They are formulated for waste pipework, not for the seals, plastics and pump components inside an appliance, and they turn a cleaning job into a parts job.

The point at which a visit is the cheaper option

Stop and call for any of three things: a smell of hot electrics while the machine runs, a breaker that goes, or water reaching the floor outside the cabinet. Panel-ready machines set into an island make that last one worse than it sounds — the water travels under the plinth and out of sight, and in a house with finished space below it is doing damage long before a puddle appears in the kitchen.

What a technician brings to it is measurement and access. Is the pump receiving its instruction, and does it pull any current when it does? Does the hose flow freely once it has been taken off at both ends? Is the non-return valve seating? What does the machine’s own stored history say about the cycles before this one? Is a little water in the bottom normal?

Yes. The sump is meant to hold a small quantity so the pump seal does not dry out between cycles, and a shallow pool in the recess around the filter is correct behaviour. What is not correct is water spread over the flat floor of the tub, deep enough to move when the door swings or to wet the underside of the lower basket. Judge it by extent rather than by presence.

Why did this start right after we fitted a new waste disposer?

Almost certainly the knockout. A new disposer arrives with its dishwasher branch sealed by a blank that has to be driven out before the hose is connected, and if it stays in place the machine has nowhere at all to send its water. The timing you describe is the classic signature. It is a fitting oversight rather than an appliance fault, and it is corrected at the disposer rather than inside the machine.

Does pre-rinsing dishes prevent this?

Scraping helps; rinsing to a shine does not, and detergents are formulated to work with some soil present. Blockages come from solids the filter cannot pass — labels soaked off jars, stones, seeds, fragments of glass — so removing those before loading matters much more than rinsing does. Cleaning the filter stack on a sensible schedule prevents more drainage trouble than any amount of pre-rinsing.
